Types of Tournaments
Outing
Type: Stroke Play
Rounds: 1
Holes: 9 or 18
Cut: No
Notes: Just a regular round of golf. Low score wins.
Cumulative Tournament
Type: Stroke Play
Rounds: 2-4
Holes: 6, 9, 18
Cut: Sometimes
Notes: Multiple rounds with the lowest cumulative score being the winner.
Qualifying Tournament
Type: Stroke Play
Rounds: 2-4
Holes: 6, 9, 18
Cut: Yes
Notes: Tournament is split into two sessions. A qualifying session of 1-2 rounds and then a championship session of 1-2 rounds. After the cut is made, the scores of each competitor are reset with only scores from the championship session counting toward the final score.
Stableford
Type: Stableford
Rounds: 1-4
Holes: 6, 9, 18
Cut: Sometimes
Notes: Just a standard stableford tournament using cumulative scoring for tournaments with multiple rounds.
Triathalon
Type: Multiple
Rounds: 3
Holes: 9-9-1
Cut: No
Notes: 9 holes of stroke play followed by 9 holes of stableford topped off with a one-hole tournament as a "sprint to the finish". Points are awarded after each round with each round weighted equally. Player with most total points at the end will be declared the winner.
Match Play
Type: Match Play, Invitational
Rounds: Multiple
Holes: 9 or 18
Cut: Yes - elimination
Notes: An 8, 16, or 32-person field will make up this single elimination match-play tournament. Either played round-by-round with a time limit to complete each round or starts at a set time and runs continuously until completion.
